Course 400 – Principles of Real Estate Appraisal

This two-day, beginning-level course introduces the valuation process, basic terminology, and three approaches used to develop real estate value opinions. Two case studies (residential and commercial) are utilized throughout the course.This course is ideal for new appraisers, for individuals contemplating entering the appraisal field and for experienced appraisers in need of a refresher course. At the conclusion of this two-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Express an understanding of basic real estate terms and principles.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the valuation process and its components.
  • Discuss the definitions of ,and steps in, each of the three approaches to value (cost, sales comparison and income capitalization).
  • Solve problems which show an understanding of the three approaches to value.

Instructor

David E. Burgoyne, ASA, SR/WA, R/W-AC is the owner of Burgoyne Appraisal Company LLC located in Michigan and co-owner of National Right of Way Review Appraisal (NR/WRA) based in Boise, Idaho.  He is active throughout the country specializing in Right of Way, Eminent Domain, Contaminated Properties, and other Litigation.  NR/WRA specializes in Review Appraisals, particularly those for public acquisition and Eminent Domain nationwide.  He is currently a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser in Indiana, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington State.  In the past, he has been licensed in Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, and West Virginia as well.  He holds senior designations in both the American Society of Appraisers and the International Right of Way Association.  Mr. Burgoyne has been an independent fee appraiser in Michigan for 39 years and has been instructing appraisal courses for IRWA since 1990.  He has taught appraisal and other courses for IRWA in Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (as well as virtually).  He also taught for IRWA as a CLIMB certified instructor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on three separate occasions and twice in the People’s Republic of China.  In 2015, Mr. Burgoyne was awarded the 2014 W. Howard Armstrong International Instructor of the Year Award by the International Right of Way Association.  This is the highest award given to instructors by the IRWA.  Mr. Burgoyne is an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor, has testified in Federal and State Courts well over one hundred times, and has been deposed on several hundred occasions.
